This cotton crochet hot pad is thick and textured, just the way I like it — simple, practical, and a nice thing to have on hand in the kitchen.
A soft landing for hot things and tender moments. 🫖
Whether you’re setting down a teapot or serving a hot dish at the table, this handmade hot pad protects your surfaces while adding a cozy accent at the same time.
I’ve made a few already and use them every day. I think you’ll enjoy making a couple yourself too — and maybe even gift a few along the way.

A Simple, Cozy Companion
The CozyPrairie Hot Pad crochet pattern came out of my own need for something that felt both useful and nice to look at. I wanted a good, thick pad to place under a teapot or a hot pan on the table — something made of cotton, easy to grab, and not too fussy to crochet.
The stitches are thick enough on their own, so there’s no need to double it. The design holds heat well and keeps its shape, and I’ve been using mine every day in the kitchen.

It’s also an easy one to customize. You can change the size if you want to make a matching set, or pick your colors depending on your space. I used undyed cotton for mine, but it looks great in soft greens or warm tones too.
I’ve already made a few. It’s one of those patterns that’s easy to come back to again.

Construction & Feel
The texture is built using front post double crochet stitches, worked in the round from the center outward. The thickness comes naturally from the stitch choice, so there’s no need to double it — it’s sturdy as is.
There’s a gentle circular rhythm to the pattern that makes it enjoyable and soothing to crochet.
The edge is finished with a thicker border that adds just the right amount of weight that helps it sit flat and hold its shape nicely.

A Little Note
This hot pad is for countertop or table use only. It’s not intended as an oven mitt or to be placed directly inside the oven. Be sure to use 100% cotton yarn only, as synthetic fibers may melt or catch fire when exposed to high heat.
