An easy homemade tikka masala spice mix for the popular tikka masala sauce or curry, and also lovely as a dry rub for vegetable kebabs or baked tofu. Making your own spice blend adds depth, freshness, and a personal touch that store-bought mixes simply can’t match.
If you enjoy rich, layered Indian flavours, this tikka masala blend is a wonderful staple to keep on hand. It can be made in advance and stored in an airtight jar for several months, ready whenever a comforting curry or quick marinade is calling.

Why Make Your Own Tikka Masala Spice Mix?
I’ve always found making masala blends to be deeply agreeable. There’s something grounding about measuring, mixing, and inhaling the aroma as the spices come together — a small ritual that already feels like cooking, even before anything hits the stove.
As called for in our previous tikka masala curry recipe, this spice mix doesn’t just flavour the dish, it gives it a personal signature. Each blend carries its own balance and character, which is part of what makes homemade masalas feel so alive and unique.
This homemade tikka masala spice mix was originally created for our Vegan Tikka Masala Curry, and it has since become a versatile favourite in our kitchen.
A Personal Blend, Made Ahead of Time
For its symphony of flavours and aroma, tikka masala curry really does beckon your own blend of spices. This mix can be made in advance and stored in an airtight jar for a few months, ready to be scooped out whenever a comforting curry or quick marinade is needed.
Whole Spices or Ground — Both Work
Whole spices, lightly toasted and freshly ground, will undoubtedly yield a livelier and fresher spice mix. If you have a spice mill or coffee grinder, this is a wonderful way to go and adds another layer of aroma to the process.
That said, using the powdered version of each spice makes this recipe far more convenient, especially if you don’t own a grinder. I often reach for whichever option fits the moment — both versions work beautifully and still result in a fragrant, balanced blend.

About Colour, Warmth & Heat
In this spice blend, paprika imparts the red colour that makes tikka masala so visually inviting. Ideally though, Kashmiri chilli powder is the best choice. The brighter varieties are less pungent and lend a beautifully vibrant red colour without overwhelming heat.
If Kashmiri chilli powder isn’t available, paprika makes a perfectly good substitute.
I intentionally left out hot chilli powder here. This way, you can adjust the heat later depending on what you’re using the masala for and who you’re cooking for.
Yield & How I Like to Use It
This blend makes about 3 tablespoons of spice mix, enough for two curry servings. You can easily scale it up and store extra for later use.
Beyond curry, I often use this mix as:
- A gentle rub for baked tofu
- A seasoning for roasted vegetables
- A base flavour for quick weeknight meals
And if you enjoy this flavour profile, you may also like our Tandoori Spice Mix, which uses a similar warm, aromatic foundation but leans more toward smoky, oven-baked or grilled dishes.
Try It in a Curry

Going to try this since I am changing my diet for health purposes.
Hello! Can I substitute some of the ingredients for garam massala? And how much?
Hi Ria, garam masala blends vary greatly from different brands or even homemade versions. So, which spices to substitute and by how much will really depend on the list and proportion of spices in the particular blend, to be able to substitute it properly.
I think this recipe together with your instructions for making ginger paste will change my cooking forever! Such a delicious blend, thank you!
I wish to cook using the spice mix for the Tikka Masala. Do I add water or milk too?
There’s a recipe on the blog for tikka masala curry where coconut milk is used. You can find it here.
